This is just a screen shot of the raw paper cut scans, I want quite a rich texture for this image but at the same time for it to look minimal and not over complicated.

Image

I need to decide on a size for my publication to get a proper idea in terms of canvas size to wok with, at the moment I am leaning towards A5 or a typical newspaper size if I decided to create a ‘zine’
With this image it is important to get across the cramp environment of East end streets so I might play around with adding more buildings and making them longer and thinner.

I’ve started by adding a distorted texture of charcoal, it is such a beautiful texture but its just didn’t sit right with the image even when I lowered the transparency like in the example above.

Image

This second texture was created using a grey promarker and works a lot better than the charcoal texture maybe because it’s a relatively flat colour and the only distortion is subtle and minimal.

Initially for this part of the image I hoped to photograph a real flame to sit in the lamp but the result didn’t work as I planned so instead I just used the paint tool on photoshop on a low hardness to create a soft edge like light caught in the thick air.
I’m not sure if I like the colour/if it is needed so I will also try a black and white version.

This last example is just a play around with transparency and the idea of shadows lurking in the lamps light.
The variation in creeper size does add an eery feel to the image which I love!

My creepers are a representation of the people of west end London in 1888.
I want the scenes to be set in the cramps slums of London.

My first example isn’t really a good representation of what I want to depict but the idea had been in my head for a while and I thought I might as well jot it down as it could be a possible image for the ripper.

My next ideas work better in terms of creating a place for the creepers to hide…

Image

This is a really simple representation of my idea, I want to capture the cramp streets with the creepers poking out of alleys.
My final idea is possibly my favourite, this could either work as single pages or a double page spread.
The single page compositions are pretty self explanatory but the double page spread would be completely black with just the outlines of the building, lamp, creepers and so on with just the lights as a negative space.

Apologies for the shoddy photograph.

I feel I’m nearly there!

The sharpness of the paper cut outs work a lot better for me although I couldn’t create a distressed effect like the paint I have tried to combine the two.

I actually thought this would add to the image but it looks really out of place against the clean cut line of the rest of the body.
One of my earlier thoughts was that my creepers were not human enough, so to solve the problem above I have added hands to the creepers to give them another human element.

For this is looked at the artist Rob Bliss would was one of the concept artist from the Harry Potter films. In particular I have been looking at his work on developing the dementors.

He has an extensive and beautiful portfolio, I recommend a look.

The initial drawings were that of almost mummy like figure with the most amazing crooked and elongated fingers which would be perfect for my creepers.

I am still undecided about the feet, I don’t think they would be that important in the compositions I am thinking about where the figures stand long, it could be an idea to have the figures legs off the page to emphasis hight.
